OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -

There's a new tower at Ocean Springs Hospital. On Thursday a building dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony was held at the new northwest tower.

As WLOX News found out this new state of the art addition has been needed for a while due to the hospital's capacity constraints.

City, county, state and hospital officials and staff gathered for the ribbon cutting of the new Northwest Tower at Ocean Springs Hospital.

Singing River Health System (SRHS) CEO Kevin Holland says this 88,000 square foot expansion has been 12 years in the making.

"This is a tribute and a compliment to how well the community receives the services of Ocean Springs Hospital. We've had numerous awards," said Holland.

County leaders say this addition improves quality of life, which will have a positive impact on economic development in Jackson County.

"This hospital expansion is going to allow our county to be on the forefront of providing good healthcare to our current residents and hopefully potential people who want to locate their business here, their industry here and locate there families here," said Jackson County Board of Supervisors President Troy Ross.

The building houses surgical pre-op and post-op care areas for same day surgery, a congestive heart failure clinic and a new unit for surgical, ortho and neuro patients.

"It's going to be easy access. We'll have less days on diversion where patients will be shipped to other hospitals like Singing River or other places in Harrison County," said SRHS Interim Chief Medical Officer Dr. Randy Roth.

Hospital officials say around late Fall or early Winter more employees could be added. The hospital's CEO says millions of patients visit Singing River Health System each year. He says since the hospital's inception in 1968 the hospital continues to see a demand for services at that facility.
