WHEELER CO., GA (WTOC) -

A Brewton Parker student drowned just days into his college life.

Incoming freshman Lavon Woods of Columbus was the person school officials identified as the person who drowned in the Oconee River on Thursday.

Woods and friends were swimming in the river along the Wheeler and Montgomery County line. Some in the group were jumping from a train trestle.

Divers and rescuers combed the river on Thursday afternoon in search after friends said Woods went under the water and didn't come back to the surface.

Woods was also a member of the school's wrestling team.
