Savannah Back to School Rally helps families get insured

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A back to school rally in Savannah signals the start of an initiative to get children and their families much needed health insurance at the Savannah Civic Center.

Mayor Edna Jackson, Step Up Savannah, and the Chatham County Safety Net Planning Council have come together to launch an ambitious outreach campaign to enroll children and families in health insurance plans called Campaign for Healthy Kids.

During the back to school rally from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. insurance workers with Right from the Start Medicaid and PeachCare will be signing up as many families as possible to put a dent in the number of uninsured in the Savannah area.

"I think it was good. They had information and entertainment, and information on PeachCare, and information on energy saving from Georgia Power, and other information you wouldn't know on your own," said Jamonica Hamilton.

"It feels great to give back to the community and give back. We want more youth to get involved in the community," said Lindsey Mitchell, Chatham County Youth Commission.

Savannah was selected as of one of eight cities to receive grant funding to conduct an 18 month campaign to increase enrollment of children and families in public health insurance programs.

The plan calls for a two-pronged approach working on enrollment assistance and outreach. The plan relies heavily on city departments, the Chatham-Savannah Public School System, area hospitals and clinics, and community based organizations.

School supplies will be given out at the event and if there is anyone who needs to know more about enrollment assistance workers will be on site answering questions.
