Lowcountry students start new school year

BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

Monday started another big first day for many students in our area, especially in the Lowcountry.

In Georgia, students who go to St. Vincent's Academy, St. James Catholic School, Blessed Sacrament, and students who live in Bacon County, all headed back on Monday.

In South Carolina, students in Jasper County, Hampton County and Beaufort counties went back.

"It was a really smooth morning and we hope the afternoon goes just as well. We had no major problems with the buses, classed were full. I visited six schools this morning.. everybody's excited and ready to get going with the new school year," Jim Foster said.

And for Beaufort County, there's a major change with their buses.

This year, Beaufort County schools and Durham School Services are rolling out a new Zonar GPS System for all of the buses. It's similar to the system used in Chatham County.

School officials say this is going to make rides safer for the kids and put parents at ease as well.

Bus drivers have already been seen out getting ready to pick up students, and they're also making sure the new GPS systems are working. They spent most of the summer training on the new devices.

The equipment is going to allow staff to know exactly where every bus is, so when parents have concerns about bus delays, staff will be able to just look up the bus and tell the exactly where the bus might be and what's going on.

The district and Durham School Services worked together to make this happen, and Durham is paying for the new technology, according to officials.
