SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Tuesday marks the anniversary of a tragedy involving the murder of a Savannah police officer and a case that made national headlines.

Family and friends are remembering fallen officer Mark MacPhail, killed in the line of duty 25 years ago on Aug. 19.

A memorial run was held early Tuesday morning from the Savannah Civic Center to the Greyhound Bus Station along Oglethorpe Avenue, which now sits near the same location where MacPhail was gunned down in a parking lot on August 19th, 1989.

The man charged with officer MacPhail's murder, Troy Anthony Davis, was convicted and sentenced to death two years later.

Davis appealed the verdict for two decades and maintained his innocence up until his execution in September 2011.
