Effingham County IDA holds another meeting to discuss Medient Studios

Posted: Updated:

Another meeting was held on Tuesday night surrounding Medient Studios project, and there were more questions than answers.

Now, a September deadline to approve the master plan may be too optimistic.

It was the first time the Effingham County IDA board members got to hear and talk about the new master plans for Medient Studios, and they had questions that simply could not be answered and they don't know why.

The IDA said they will be ready in September with a new supplemental agreement, but Medient Studios may not.

The ball is Medient's court. The IDA still needs to receive information like development of regional impact, job creation and capital investment levels.

The goal is to approve the master plans at the September board meeting and then have the first office building up by the end of the year. The CEO of the IDA Board said he said they are not sure if Medient will be able to get all the needed items done by then, which would push this back even more.

Another interesting observation is no other offers have been put on the table to buy and use the land Medient plans to use. If there were, there may be pressure on the studio to act faster.

"I did sense some frustration tonight," said Effingham County IDA CEO John Henry. "The project is now a year old and we still have no timeline and there is frustration there. Like I said in the meeting, we are starting from square one again and we are trying to expedite the process and get all the work compiled from the last 18 months."

Another big point of concern at the meeting was how in the world is Medient going to pay for this project with their shares selling at fractions of a cent. Henry said there are things that have been discussed and done that cannot be released to the public at this time.
