A local Christian academy receives new name, new renovations

Pioneer Valley Christian School unveiled a new name, a new sign and new expansions on Tuesday night.

Surrounded by parents, teachers and students, the school's headmaster announced some big changes to the campus.

"We believe a lot of parents are looking for a school that has a solid foundation, looking for strong academics. That's what we are all about," Headmaster Tim Duff said.

After 42 years, the school is now an academy, the Pioneer Valley Christian Academy. And they have a new sign to prove it.

In addition to the new name, PVCA is also in the process of preparing for a new gym and media center.

"We have everything in place," Duff said. "We have a builder and we are just waiting to raise that last few dollars."

The project will cost the academy just under $6 million dollars, but the price tag isn't worrisome to some parents.

"If you don't grow and change you become stagnant and education should not be stagnant," said Kolu Sharpe, a parent of PVCA students.

Emily Andre, a teacher and alumni of PVCA with children at the academy, says her family has donated money since before she can remember because she believes in PVCA's mission.

"And it's been really fun to see how much the school changed through the years since I was a student here. And now having my own children here, and the growth that has happened," she said.

Duff is ready to put the shovels in the ground and has already started some work inside. He's hoping to raise the $1 million still needed to complete the project within the next two to three months.

In addition to the new gym and media center, the academy will also be adding five new classrooms. They're hoping to double their admissions with the new renovations.
