CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

A sandhill crane recently showed up in a North Chesterfield family's yard, leaving the residents puzzled and bird experts concerned.

Oliver Hedgepeth spotted the three-foot tall bird in his front yard over the weekend. The Richmond Wildlife Center determined it was a young sandhill crane and it was starving.

The wildlife center staff arrived, but the bird didn't want to be captured too easily. Eventually they were able to get it into their hands after feeding it.

The good news is the bird, which the family named Fraser, is now at an outdoor aviary and eating pretty well.

However, staffers are working with a state biologist because sandhill cranes are not typically found in our area and Central Virginia is not on the normal migration route. The birds often migrate in groups and there are no other reported sightings in the area.

Biologists are checking permits to see if the bird may be privately owned. The other likely scenario is the crane lost its way from its mother and father and wasn't able to find food.

All of the birds primary feather on both wings are damaged, so it can soar close to the ground but can't get lift and full flight.

The Hedgepeth family donated $100 to the Wildlife Foundation and said they did a great job.
