Hilton Head flyover bridge crews try to beat the heat

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

In the Lowcountry construction crews are almost at the halfway point with the Hilton Head Island flyover bridges.

Workers have been out there every day this summer, including this week, which is one of the hottest weeks this year.

It's is nearly 100 degrees in Hilton Head on Wednesday, and crews were out working. The sun is beating down on the crew from RR Dawson Bridge Company as they're in the process of drilling shafts into the ground for the flyover bridges.

The crew is focused on their work, but they're also trying to figure out how to keep cool.

"This morning we gave a briefing on heat exhaustion and what to look for, the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion so that we can look out for each other," said John Dowdell.

They started working at 6 a.m. on Wednesday so they could be done with work earlier and workers were given extra bottles of water and instructed to take extra breaks.

While the heat is unbearable for the average person, these guys are used to it.

"Well, we work outdoors, and with the nice breeze blowing out from the river, it does help a little bit," said Dowdell.

A bottle of water also helps.
