SMITH COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jeff Daniels, charged with aggravated assault, but accused of a hate crime against mixed race children, says his family is now receiving death threats.

"Yes. I'm scare to death," said Daniels from his home Wednesday. "That's why I've been vomiting and can't sleep. It's just a terrible accident. I mean it's terrible." replied Daniels.

Daniels has been accused by some family members of being a racist and attacking his stepfather, Craig Wilson, over visitation of Wilson's mixed race grandchildren.

Daniels is charged with beating and shooting Wilson Friday night at his Smith county home. He says it had nothing to do with the grandchildren.

"No, the grand kids were not even there. It had nothing to do with them," said Daniels.

Daniels says the incident was sparked because his mother was beating his daughter. The 37 year old Smith County man said Wednesday that Wilson came at him with a loaded gun.

"When I got over there, my daughter, they said my mother was jumping on my daughter," said Daniels. "When I ran up, a bunch of people was there. Craig pulled a gun out of his pocket and started around something coming at me on an angle."

Daniels said they fought, fell to the ground and the gun went off. Wilson was shot in the stomach and remains hospitalized. Daniels says it was a terrible accident.

Daniels says he is not a racist and has no idea who burned a cross in his mother's yard two weeks ago.
