WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

NC Court of Appeals Judge Bob Hunter says he hopes Gov. Pat McCrory's decision to appoint him to the Supreme Court will provide a leg up in his campaign to stay there.

"Yeah, I'd like to win," said Hunter, who faces Court of Appeals Judge Sam Ervin IV in November's general election. "So yeah, I hope it's an advantage. I hope it's not a disadvantage. But I don't really look at that so much as I look at doing the work and trying to make sure everybody understands that I'm going to be straight down the middle and fair to everybody."

Hunter made the comments in Wilmington after administering the oath of office to Michael Lee, who is filling the unexpired term of Sen. Thom Goolsby.

Before the event, Hunter - clad in his black judge's robe - handed a reporter an unsolicited copy of the press release McCrory's office issued about the appointment earlier in the day.

Hunter will fill the seat of Justice Mark Martin, who the governor selected to finish out the term of retiring Chief Justice Sarah Parker.

Hunter has served on the North Carolina Court of Appeals since 2008.
