(CNN) - With a few short weeks left of summer, fall soon will be here, so take full advantage of nature's greats this time of year.

One trip to a local farmers' market or even the produce section of the supermarket is all the evidence needed that the options are plentiful this time of year.

When buying fruit, think about color. Eat the rainbow; buy as many colors as possible to get the nutrients needed from fruit.

For example, not only are cherries low in calories and high in fiber, they contain antioxidants that help fight cancer and heart disease. They also may have weight-control properties, according to recent research.

Watermelon lovers can rejoice because this fruit is abundant this time of year. It's also 92 percent water, which means it helps people eat less and feel more satisfied at meals - which might be key for those watching their weight.

Also, juicy stone fruits like peaches, nectarines and plums contain compounds that may fight metabolic syndrome, a group of conditions that increase the risk of heart disease and diabetes. The same compounds may also hold potential for combating breast cancer.
