Operation Clean Sweep cleans up Avondale neighborhood

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The City of Savannah's Operation Clean Sweep joined forces with residents, and multiple local organizations to clean up the Avondale neighborhood on Saturday.

Savannah Fire and Emergency Services, Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department, Keep Savannah Beautiful, and volunteers from the Inheritance Center, all teamed up with the City of Savannah to make a big difference in the community.

Officials from the Savannah Fire Department went from door to door in the Avondale neighborhood checking to see if residents had working smoke detectors, and giving away detection devices for those who didn't have one.

"Most of the residents appreciate this because they were longing for this to be done some years ago, it's well overdue, and we're greatful that someone took the time out to help us and get it organized," said resident Wallace Williams.

"In this extreme heat, it let's you know that somebody cares. So, the fact that they're out here, and took time on their off day to come help serve us, you know it's a wonderful thing."

City of Savannah Sanitation Services picked up trash in the area, while volunteers swept and mowed grass.

The parts of the Avondale neighborhood included in the clean up were from California Avenue to New York Avenue, and Pennsylvania to North Carolina Avenue.
