Savannah Inner City Night Shelter to host 5K

Posted: Updated:

The Inner City Night Shelter is hosting their first annual 5k run for the homeless, in September.

Proceeds from the event will go to support the programs and services at Inner City Night Shelter.

The shelter has been in operation for 30 years, providing meals to about 120 people each evening from 4:30-5:30.

"For me the volunteering is a good thing, there are times that I feel it could be me walking in and out," said volunteer, RT Austin.

"I feel a sense of satisfaction, that is I can help someone out, if it were me maybe someone would help me out in a time of need. "

The shelter also provide housing for about 80 men and woman every night in their facilities, while providing assistance with counseling, job training, and medical assistance.

"We have an excess of 4,000 homeless people in Savannah not alot of people are aware of the plight we deal with," said Yvone Pryor, the shelter's executive director.
"4,000 plus people that have no where to live, be it adult men, women, and children, those that are mentally ill, and the elderly."

With the holidays around the corner organizers say that this will be a great way to give back by putting people's feet to the pavement.

The executive director said it best, "We have to deal with this as a community, it isn't something we can turn our head to."
