Savannah Electric Reminds Eligible Seniors of Discount Rates

WTOC first told you yesterday that Savannah Electric has filed for a nine percent base rate increase. This is the first time the company has tried to raised its base rate since 2001. Savannah Electric knows that low-income seniors will need some help covering the extra expense.

"We have about 3,750 seniors who get the discount right now," said the company's John Kraft. "We think there's more who are eligible, so we try to get the word out in the form of pamphlets and other means in their bills, because if you are eligible you should get that rate."

Seniors age 65 and older with an income of $14,000 or less are eligible. There won't be a rate hike unless and until it is approved by the Georgia Public Service Commission, a process that will take at least six months.
