Mark Sanford makes a stop in the Lowcountry

BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

Congressman Mark Sanford met with a number of constituents Wednesday in Beaufort County to discuss many different issues.

One of the issues is the air station and the brand new F-35 B joint strike fighter jets, which just arrived last month.

Some Beaufort County residents are nervous the noise will be too loud.

Sandy and Ed Stephens live in Beaufort about one mile away from the air station. They've been here for 16 years dealing with the noise from the air station training on the jets, but with the F-35 B coming they're afraid that the noise is going to be louder and they're going to be training a lot more."

"They come up and over..and around ... and down," Sandy said.

Sandy said they've expressed their concerns about the F-35 B to county council but got nowhere.

WTOC talked with Council Member Brian Flewelling, and he said this is a concern for many in the county, but unfortunately, this is an issue that has to be taken up with the federal government.

On Tuesday, Sandy and Ed spoke with Congressman Mark Sanford during his visit.

"Can we get an outlying field for the F-35 B," she asked.

"I'm going to push for an outlying field. You know this is the congressional district most affected. I'm going to work with colleagues on that front and the two senators and push for them in that direction," Sanford said.

The VMFAT- 501 squadron, which flies the F-35 B's will start training on them in October. The Stephens are hoping they can get other communities to speak out about the noise beforehand.
