COLUMBIA, SC (WMBF) - Votes fell short to bring a bill back to life that would allow a tax hike for firefighting on the South strand.

There wasn't enough votes to give the local bill, S. 293, new life in an extended legislative session held Wednesday.

Senate Bill 293 was introduced by Senator Ray Cleary and Representative Nelson Hardwick to raise the millage cap in Murrells Inlet and Garden City, after the fire department proposed the tax increase in 2013.

Gov. Haley vetoed the bill in June.

Since the governor's veto, members of the MIGC fire department, residents and property owners have worked to override her decision, according to President William Fancher of the Murrells Inlet Garden City Professional Firefighters Association.
