BURGAW, NC (WECT) -

Commissioners in Pender County voted Wednesday to reopen the search for a new County Manager and expand the venues where the job will be posted.

Chairman David Williams said the board interviewed two candidates for the job last week, after receiving close to 20 applications for the position.

A third finalist received a job offer before leaders in Pender County could set up an interview. All three were from outside of the local area, according to Williams.

"We just don't want to rush into the decision," Williams said. "We may go back to these candidates after another search."

Williams added that Commissioners plan to look into a policy requiring all Pender County department heads to move to the county within 12 months of being hired. He said that would be brought up for discussion when Commissioners meet next Tuesday.

According to Interim County Manager, Bob Murphy, the County Manager would still be required to move to the county and would not be impacted if the policy changed.

"We want to talk about whether the policy is inhibiting us at all in finding the best candidate," Williams said. "A spouse's job or a house could be keeping a potential candidate from applying for the position."

Williams said Bob Murphy will continue to handle the County Manager duties on an interim basis until a permanent replacement can be hired. Williams is hoping to have some overlap between the new manager taking over and Murphy's departure.
