Witnesses: Man lucky to be alive after train slams into semi

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Witnesses say a man is lucky to be alive after a train smashed into his tractor trailer just seconds before he jumped to safety.

"I saw the arm go down, I saw the guy jump, I heard the train and it was like something out of a reality show," said Steve Fuller, witness to the crash.

It all happened just before 8 a.m. Thursday on Bourne Avenue just east of the intersection with Highway 21. The truck was destroyed by the train's impact.

In an exclusive interview, Fuller told WTOC he saw the railroad crossing guards come down on the truck, then saw the driver jump out just seconds before impact. He says there was a loud bang and he could not believe what he had just witnessed.

"The most intense crash noise you've ever heard. The guy hits the ground, the hood flies off, lands on top of the man and next thing you know, the cab and the trailer were separated," stated Fuller.

"Well, you know it's always luck when you have an accident with a train and you make it out alive. That's luck," said Sgt. Bobby Stewart, Savannah-Chatham Metro Police.

Police say the truck driver only suffered minor injuries.

The intersection re-opened to traffic around 12:30 p.m.

The crash is under investigation.
