Police investigating 4 rapes in the past week

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

According the Rape Crisis Center, rape is on the rise in Savannah. There have been four this past week, with the most recent being Wednesday night on Eisenhower Drive.

The first one was last Thursday at a cemetery on Ogeechee Road, on Tuesday there was a rape on Lilac Avenue, and then on Monday in the Cloverdale-Laurel Grove area.

Rape Crisis officials said it's hard to guess why these numbers are on the rise, but they said it's a matter of catching these suspects because some of them are multiple offenders.

Officials said there have been 30 more rapes this year than there were last year.

This time last year, there had been 52 rapes and now Savannah is already at 83 rapes this year.

In the month of August, there have been eight more than last year. In August 2013, there were six and this year, we've had 14.

Officials said about three of their most recent victims were raped by strangers.

"Stranger rape is the most horrific type of rape, in that it's the most violent offense where the victim suffered the most damage and the most harm and they are often times the cases where we see fatalities," Executive Director of the Rape Crisis Center Kesha Gibson-Carter said. "So it is very alarming for us here at the Rape Crisis Center when we see an uptick in the number of stranger rapes."

Police are still looking for suspects involved- if you have any information contact CrimeStoppers.

Memorial Day weekend is in full effect, which means that law enforcement is out in full force. The Department of Natural Resources is also stressing safety throughout the weekend.  Officers say that they'll be cracking down on the usual charges, such as those not wearing seatbelts, or drinking and driving.
