Metro officer fired over shooting of unarmed man

A Savannah-Chatham Metro Police officer has been fired after shooting an unarmed man.

Police have just released details of their internal investigation into officer Bobby Waiters, who was fired last week. The shooting happened in April 2013.

According to the report, a woman flagged Waiters down about strangers in her backyard. Waiters told investigators he ordered one of them, Timothy Williams, to stop, but Williams charged him, so Waiters fired.

Williams survived and told police he and his two brothers were cutting through the backyard while running from gunfire. A gun was found near the scene, but Williams said it belonged to his brother.

Last year a grand jury cleared Waiters of criminal wrongdoing, but internal affairs found he violated policy because he wasn't able to tell investigators what immediate danger the suspect posed. He is now appealing that decision before the Civil Service Board.
