AUBURN, AL (WSFA) -

The first tailgating zone opened up at 2 p.m. Thursday, and fans from across Alabama and even this weekend's opponent, Arkansas, came early to get their spot.

"Well we actually left last night about 7:30, got here 3 in the morning. Went to Walmart slept in the parking lot in the motorhome, came out here about 9:30, and this is our fourth trip and we have found that auburn's the friendliest place to come watch a football game. So we try to come every other year," said Bob Lucky, an Arkansas fan.

What a difference a few minutes can make. What was earlier a quiet field, filled with fans marking their spot quickly turned into a motorcade of motorhomes. Auburn fans say tailgating is an important tradition they try to pass on to younger generations.

"We've already gone out and scouted the area and getting the kids involved in activities and showing them the campus. This'll be their first game, and I'm trying to make it a real good experience for them," said Patrick Morrow, a lifelong Auburn fan.

Fans also enjoy coming together to cheer on their favorite team.

"It's a common bond. It's meeting new people. You know, you never know cause you run into people that you went to school with that you hadn't seen in years," Morrow said. "It's just an enjoyable time to get to know other people and relax and just have a good time."

Auburn fans even have a reputation for being friendly to their opponents, inviting them to tailgate in some cases.

"All over town we're always greeted very nicely, and we're going to come back as long as they treat us as they have in the past," Lucky said.

Kickoff between Auburn and Arkansas is at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
