Residents worry about speeders in Chesterfield County neighborhood

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

One Chesterfield neighborhood is saying slow down! Residents near Bensley Elementary School say drivers are going too fast through their small neighborhood.

Signs clearly state the speed limit for the neighborhood near Bensley Elementary is 25 miles per hour. But neighbors say drivers just don't seem to care.

Traffic near Bensley Elementary school is pretty steady. And with school starting Tuesday, it's about to get a whole lot busier.

"Somebody getting hit, that's my biggest fear," said Harry Howell.

Howell has lived at the corner of Strathmore and Sherbourne Roads for all of his 60 years. But, he says in recent years the traffic has been speeding through this neighborhood.

He worries animals like his dog, Belle or even a child, could be hurt by a careless driver.

"It's scary and could happen before you know it," Howell said.

That's why resident Adam Stemmons contacted police.

"Careless. Completely careless. Several of them are completely careless," Stemmons said about those drivers.

Chesterfield County Police put what they call a "speed spy" in the neighborhood for several days last week. They say out of about 330 drivers, 85 percent of them were traveling 29 miles per hour or lower.

"We are looking into it and we will have officers speaking to the folks who brought it to our attention and working with them, so we can work to be more visible and address those concerns as needed," explained Captain Dave Shand, Chesterfield Police Department.

But, that's not allaying fears for everyone in this community as more than 500 Chesterfield buses are due to hit the road Tuesday:

"It's scary, it's scary. It's definitely scary," Stemmons said.

While police say it doesn't seem to be an issue, they are reminding drivers to slow down and follow the posted speeds.

Chesterfield County school leaders said 500 buses filled with 45,000 students will hit the roads starting Tuesday.
