NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

The attorney representing former New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin in the appeal of his conviction on corruption charges has petitioned the court to be allowed to withdraw from the case.

In a court document filed Friday, attorney Robert Jenkins said Nagin is indigent and unable to pay for the costs associated with the appeal.

Jenkins asked the court to assign a public defender to Nagin's case.

In July, Nagin filed a formal notice of appeal in the corruption case that resulted in a guilty verdict on 20 criminal counts and a prison sentence of 10 years. He was convicted in February on charges including conspiracy, bribery, money laundering, wire fraud and filing false tax returns. The charges stem from his two terms as mayor from 2002 to 2010 - including the Hurricane Katrina disaster in 2005.

Nagin is scheduled to report to a federal prison on Sept. 8.
