Great Minds in STEM, a national nonprofit organization, held its Viva Technology Program at H.V. Jenkins High School in Savannah on Friday.

The goal is to create an increased level of awareness and importance of a science, technology, engineering and mathematics education.

Students worked intently on several STEM project based exercises and challenges that expand their understanding of the scientific method and the engineering design process. "We try to give them hands on experience so they can make a tangible connection between what they're learning in science and math classes, and how this ultimately relates to a professional career in the STEM industry," said Angel Haro of Great Minds in STEM.

Local STEM college students from Savannah State University, Armstrong State University and Savannah Technical College served as peer mentors guiding the teams through the challenges.
