Sea Tow Foundation offers free life jacket rentals for boaters

Many people are gearing up for a busy weekend at the beach and out on our waterways.

The Sea Tow Foundation is offering free life jackets if you don't have one, in both the Palmetto and the Peach States.

It's a great idea just in time for the big holiday weekend.

If you're out in the water this weekend and you don't have enough life vests for every person on the boat, you might want to come out and get one.

The department of natural resources requires by law that there must be a life jacket for every person on the boat, and the life jacket must be the right size.

The Sea Tow foundation says thankfully, a $7,000 grant from Anheuser-Busch and Southern Eagle Distributing, they have enough life vests to make sure people in the area are prepared this holiday weekend.

"We want everybody to be safe on the water," said Capt. Chris Morris of the Sea Tow Foundation. "If you should happen to be in a situation where you really need a life jacket, and you come up short, it can make for a really bad day. It can also get very expensive if you get a fine for not having the proper equipment."

Throughout Labor Day weekend, people can come out to the Hilton Head Harbor Marina to get a life jacket. All they ask is that you bring it back when you're finished with it.

If you're caught without a life jacket, DNR says you can face a pretty hefty fine of up to $470.
