Jasper County School Board meets over new centralized district administrative office

Some Jasper County residents and school board members question if the school board violated the Freedom of Information Act when they went into executive session at their meeting Thursday night.

According to the agenda, the reason for the executive session was so the board could hear contractor presentations for the design of a new centralized district administrative office, which will be located on Bees Creek Road.

The two board members and some residents said discussing this in executive session violates FOIA because the wording on the agenda said "contractor presentations."

However, the board said the meeting was about "proposed contractual agreements," which can be discussed in executive session, according to FOIA's open meeting provision.

One school board member told WTOC that he left because he didn't think the private meeting was legal.

"I didn't think it was vetted properly to the public about the hearing…they gave 24 hours notice but a project of this magnitude, one point six million dollars of the tax payers money, I think they need to be more involved," Tedd Moyd said.

WTOC did hear from the district's lawyer Friday, and he said the board didn't break any laws.

At their next board meeting they will go into another executive session, for another presentation.
