Nashville favorite Las Paletas offers cool treats year-round

Labor Day may signal the end of summer, but a Nashville cold summer treat still has plenty of licks left.

Las Paletas is 12th Avenue South's answer to the ice cream man. The Paz family opened the place, but it's not a mom-and-pop shop. It's run by two sisters, Normal and Vanessa Paz.

"It was mostly part of wanting to share a part of our culture, looking to offer a healthier choice for a treat," Norma Paz said.

Mango, blueberry and even avocado take a dip in Las Paletas' frozen 13-degree machine for 45 minutes.

There's a collection of cute all around the store, where the faces do the talking.

"It's kind of a date, we like to go on our mommy-daughter dates," one visitor said Monday.

Even those with a more mature palette sample the variety of flavors.

"Watermelon, coffee and I also got chocolate and strawberry for later," another visitor said.

Las Paletas was a gamble and business risk for the Paz sisters. They only dreamed it would succeed, and it has beyond their dreams.

"It does bring out the child in everyone," Norma Paz said.
