OSHA: First incident investigated at Savannah plant

The investigation continues into the death of an International Paper employee.

Ricky Salter died Sunday afternoon at the Savannah plant. First responders said it appeared to be an industrial accident.

OSHA says their investigation will be looking for OSHA violations, which could mean a citation for the company if they find any.

"Depending on what we find during our investigation, if there were safety hazards and safety issues with their program, that the gentleman was not properly protected, there is a potential for a violation to be issued to the company," said Savannah's OSHA Director Robert Vazzi. "Then we go through a discussion with them about the violation with them once it's issued and try to settle a case."

While OSHA investigates work-place incidents throughout the year, Vazzi says this appears to be the first one reported at the Savannah plant.

"I did research our history with the company. I cannot find anything related to an accident or fatality at the location here," said Vazzi.

OSHA says these investigations could take up to 6 months to complete.
