Chatham Co Commission to vote on SCMPD merger

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Chatham County Commission will vote on Friday on a proposal that gives the city manager the final say on the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Dept. merger.

The city's proposal gives the city manager the final say in hiring or firing the police chief, their salary and the choice of a selection advisory panel, all things the county wanted to share.

"It is sad and unfortunate that Savannah did not come through with a fair proposal for the unincorporated area residents because to this point it has been a huge benefit for the citizens of Savannah," said County Commissioner Dean Kicklighter. "Unfortunately it has been something terrible for the unincorporated area resident. I anticipate the chairman, along with the commission, will straighten things out once and for all."

Commission Chairman Al Scott has set a deadline of November 30 for an arrangement to be set.
