Hoppin' John Ingredients a Hit at Stores

It's a New Year's tradition for many people: eating hoppin' john. This Southern tradition is said to bring good luck all year round.

The Kroger on Gwinnett Street ordered 1,000 pounds of collard greens just for this weekend. And of course they also stocked up black-eyed peas, rice and more than tripled their order of ham hocks.

The ingredients for hoppin' john are the most popular items at food stores this time of year, and all the employees stay busy. "It gets really, really, really busy," said lead nutrition clerk Debbie Livingston. "A lot of people run around shopping for produce, of course all the collard greens that you see behind me, and back here stays really busy."

If you are looking for red peas this year to add to hoppin' john, they're hard to find. The crops in Florida were destroyed and the new batch was never approved by the department of agriculture.

Many recipes are available online: simply search for "hoppin' john" on a search engine like Google or Yahoo.
