Earlier this week, we brought you the story of a 78-year-old man who was assaulted outside a Catholic chapel in downtown Beaufort. Today, Charles Hess spoke with WTOC about the incident.
He is now recovering at home. He was beat up pretty badly. However, the terrifying experience has only increased his faith in God.
"I took about two steps off the sidewalk and wham, he hit me on the side of the head with something, I don't know what, it wasn't his fist," recalled Charles. "He shoved me down and hit me twice on the side of the face."
That's what happened as he approached St. Peter's Catholic Chapel for his weekly hour of adoration. "I think if he had hit me a few more times, it would have killed me. He cracked me across here, one lower, a broken jaw, he cut up my ear and side of my face."
But the Hesses aren't letting this attack alter their dedication to their faith or their church. In fact, wife Bernadine continues to do her hour of adoration and Charles plans on doing the same very soon. "I'll be back when I can feel better," he told us.
Although the Hesses don't know why someone would commit such a horrible act, they say it has only strengthened their faith.
"I guess it really hits you when you realize things can happen so quickly, but he's here," said Bernadine.
However, Charles is hoping police will find his attacker so he'll be sure it won't happen to anyone else. "I'd like to know why he did it, other than the fact he tried to roll me for money, maybe he's got a drug habit. He wasn't going to get anything anyways."
Charles says his attacker didn't even attempt to take his wallet or anything from him.
Police are still looking for the man responsible for this crime. If you have any information about this case, please call the Beaufort Police Department at 843.322.7900.
