COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina House committees will pick their leaders as the chamber's organizational session continues.

Newly elected Speaker Jay Lucas will dole out more committee assignments Wednesday. Committees will then meet to choose their chairmen.

That includes filling a vacancy on the House Education Committee. The retirement this year of GOP Rep. Phil Owens of Easley created a leadership opening. That new leader could help guide the Legislature's response to the state Supreme Court's ruling last month that lawmakers must correct their failure to ensure all children can succeed in school.

Lucas made assignments Tuesday to the House Ethics Committee, which met after the chamber adjourned. Republican Rep. Kenny Bingham of Cayce will continue to be chairman of the committee tasked with overseeing the campaign filings of House members and candidates.
