2014 was the warmest year on record globally, a fact that pushes us toward prudent thinking regarding energy sources. The City of Savannah has joined with Tybee Island in an effort to increase solar energy consumption to 15 percent of Georgia's electricity by 2030.

If we do that, and experts believe it's an achievable goal, we will offset the pollution created by 3.5 million cars each year.

Beaufort Mayor Billy Keyserling is also an alternative energy proponent. Keyserling questioned the wisdom of drilling for oil off the Carolina coast and threatening the state's ecosystem and tourism.

A wiser choice, he believes, would be harnessing South Carolina's wind, which is more abundant than anywhere else on the east coast.

The world's getting hotter and alternatives to fossil fuel are demanding more attention and action. We believe that solar and wind make sense.
