"Grand Festival Day" kicks off as part of Savannah's Black Heritage Festival

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The main event of Savannah's Black Heritage Festival, “Grand Festival Day,” will take place on Saturday at the Savannah Civic Center.

Presented by the city of Savannah Department of Cultural Affairs and Savannah State University, the 2015 festival theme is “Today's Youth. Tomorrow's Legacy.”

The day will include an array of family-oriented activities, and will end with a star-studded concert.

Itinerary:

8:30 a.m. : WALK GEORGIA
  • County and city officials, along with youth groups, will walk to Forsyth Park and back, to promote a healthy Georgia and healthy Savannah.

11 a.m.-2 p.m. : ANNUAL ADULT HEALTH FAIR
  • Screenings, healthy food presentations, exercise demonstrations, and more will take place in the first floor lobby.
11 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. : YOUTH PROGRAMS

11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. : 4TH ANNUAL “HELP YOUR BODY GET ITS MOVE ON”
  • An exercise program for youth will take place in the third floor ballroom. 
  • Session I [Notes: 11:00 a.m. – noon]
  • Session II [Notes: 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.]
11 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. : SAVANNAH STARS WITH MAGIC MARC
  • Entertainment by Savannah Y.E.S. Stars, magic show and storytelling will take place on the second floor.
  • Session I [Notes: 11:00 a.m. – noon]
  • Session II [Notes: 12:30 – 1:30 p.m.]
11 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.: CRAFTS VILLAGE
  • Crafting, including making dolls, masks, jewelry, baskets, fishnets, woodworking, culinary arts, and wallet crafts, will take place in the second floor lobby.

  • Session I [Notes: 11:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.]
  • Session II [Notes: 12:30 p.m. – 1:45 p.m.]
  • Session III [Notes: 2:00 p.m. – 3:15 p.m.]
11 a.m. – 6 p.m. : DOCUMENTARY MINI-THEATRE
  • African American Historical documentaries will be shown continuously on the second floor.
11 a.m. – 6 p.m. : SANKOFA AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUM ON WHEELS
  • Taking place in the Mason Room on the second floor
1-2:30 p.m. : LOCAL AUTHORS CORNER
  • Self-published local authors will discuss challenges and successes in writing, publishing and marketing book sales, on the second floor.
3 p.m. : GRAND FESTIVAL DAY RIBBON-CUTTING CEREMONY
  • Launch of the festival day's local performances with host, Magic Marc, will take place in the MLK Arena.
3:30 p.m. : ANNUAL YOUTH TALENT EXTRAVAGANZA
  • Happening in the MLK Arena
5:30 - 9 p.m. : LIVE CONCERTS
  • Featuring winners of the Y.E.S. Talent Showcase; Leonard, Coleman & Blunt (former lead singers from the Temptations, Platters and Drifters); OMG Girlz and Doug E Fresh. 
  • This will take place in the MLK Arena.
The 2015 festival is the 16th festival produced by Savannah State University. All festival events are sponsored by the City of Savannah, and are free and open to the public.
