Young Soldier Responds to "The Gift Of A Child" - 12/20/04

01/14/05

I AM 19 YEARS OLD AND PRESENTLY IN IRAQ FIGHTING. I WAS DEEPLY TOUCHED BY THE EDITORIAL OF THE YOUNG CHILD SAVING THE SOLDIERS FROM THE IMPROVISED EXPLOSIVE DEVICE. A THOUGHT AND SENSE OF RELEIF CAME OVER ME AS I REALIZED WHAT I STAND UP FOR IS OUT THERE. MY BELIEF MAY BE DISGUISED IN THE FORM OF AN INNOCENT CHILD'S CRIES, OR A STARVING AND SUFFERING FAMILY.

EVERYDAY I SEE THE SUN RISE AND SET OVER THE BROKEN COMMUNITY OF THE CITY. A PERSON'S BLIND PERSPECTIVE WOULD NO DOUBT INDULGE THEMSELVES IN THE PHYCIAL ASPECTS. HOWEVER, WHEN I LOOK AT THE SUN RISE AND SET OVER THE PEOPLE OF TIKRIT I FEEL FOR THEM, I FEEL FOR THE INSECURITY THEY HAVE BURDENING THIER EVERYDAY TASKS, FAMILIES, AND HEARTS.

I UNDERSTAND THE FEAR. I ONCE TALKED WITH AN OLD WOMAN ABOUT HOW SHE HANDLED THE HATRED IN THE CITY. SHE ASKED ME HOW DO I MAKE IT KNOWING THAT IT IS OUT THERE. THE IRAQI PEOPLE ARE NOT OUR ENEMY - IGNORANCE IS. IT IS NOT JUST THE AMERICAN'S FIGHT, IT IS THE HUMAN RACE THAT HAS THIS ISSUE TUGGING AT OUR HEARTS. THE MEDIA FLIPS ON THE TV AND EMPHASIZES IN THE FIGHTING AND DEATH OVER HERE; BUT THE TRUTH IS THAT THERE ARE JUST AS MANY POSITIVES AS NEGATIVES.

THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT THE NEGATIVES STICK LONGER. THIS IS REALIZED IN ONE SUNSET, AND I HAVE BEEN HERE BUT FOR A SHORT TIME. IT MAKES ME WONDER IF OTHERS KNOW NOW WHAT I DO. FOR EVERYONE WHO HAS READ THAT EXCERPT, AND WAS JUST AS EFFECTED AS I WAS, I INVITE YOU TO COME OUT OF THE STEREOTYPICAL SHELL AND OPEN YOUR EYES FOR THE PEOPLE AND THIS COUNTRY -- BUT MOST OF ALL FOR GOD.
