Recent study shows women are reluctant to discuss personal finances

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Women are generally perceived to be great communicators who are willing to discuss a wide range of topics. However, personal finance may be one area they are reluctant to discuss.

According to a recent study, eight in ten women confess that they avoid talking about their finances, even with their closest friends and family. The number one reason: the subject is “too personal.”

President of Personal Investing at Fidelity, Kathleen Murphy, says that beneath this reluctance to discuss the subject, lays a lack of confidence in their knowledge of financial planning and investing. Given that nine out of ten women will be the sole financial decision-makers of their household at some point in their lives, it is imperative that they have a solid understanding of how to manage their money and invest in the future.

The study also found that women are overwhelmingly ready to become more engaged in their financial futures. Ninety-two percent of women say they want to learn more about financial planning, and 83 percent want to get more involved in their finances within the next year.
