Notre Dame Academy closes its doors

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - According to the Diocese of Savannah, Notre Dame Academy, a Catholic elementary school, has officially closed its doors for the last time.

They held a special celebration Friday morning with song, prayer and plenty of awards for the school's 38 students.

Several families, parents and members of the Catholic community attended the ceremony including Bishop Gregory Hartmayer.

"I think of the students who I know of have attended here through the years back when my daughter was here, when my grandchildren was here and the achievements they've made," Veronica Campbell said.

The closure is the result of a steep decline in enrollment over the years. Savannah Bishop Gregory Harymayer, OFM Conv., endorse the recommendation of the Notre Dame Academy Review Committee to close the school because of the drop in the number of students.

Catholic Schools Superintendent David Marion, in a letter sent to parents March 6, said the Catholic Schools Office will assist in the transition of students for the 2015-2016 school year. Catholic education is available at other Catholic schools in the Savannah area.

In 1990 Sacred Heart School merged with Cathedral Day School. The merged grammar school was named Notre Dame Academy. The school has been located on the Bull Street campus since 2000.
