Car gets stuck in wet cement after I-16 construction zone confuses driver

CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) - Navigating the I-16 roadwork turned treacherous for one man on Thursday morning.

He was trying to exit I-16 westbound to Dean Forest Road when he wrecked into a construction zone. The Georgia Department of Transportation is working to repair the concrete slabs on the ramps in the overnight hours.

The driver tells WTOC that he just could not see where to go and ran straight into the wet concrete. The tow truck driver says the car was stuck for an hour, and he was concerned that they may not be able to get it out.

Tow crews were able to pull the car from the cement and it has been removed from the construction zone.

"Expect the unexpected," Jill Nagel with GDOT said.

That's the message from the Georgia Department of Transportation after the driver drove straight into wet concrete as he tried to get off the Dean Forest exit on I-16 westbound. He said the cones blocking off the area were misleading and he wasn't sure where he was supposed to exit.

"You need to slow down so you can take that exit without damaging the work that they've done," Nagel said.

The cones would have been removed Thursday morning, but the car did so much damage, the had to re-pour the concrete Thursday afternoon.

GDOT officials said this will not put them behind schedule or cost them more money, but it may cost the driver.

The contractor will goafter the driver's insurance to pay for the damages and repairs. And officials said  this should be all the more reason to drive vigilantly during construction zones.

"When something is coned or barreled off, there is a reason and it is unsafe on that side so we just want everyone to stay in the designated lane that is not coned off," Nagel said.

GaDOT will be working on the westbound ramps at exits 160 to 157 for the next few nights. Then this weekend, they will be working on the eastbound ramps in the same location from I-95 to Dean Forest Road. Please drive with caution.
