Robber shot, killed by employee at smoke shop

A robber was shot and killed by an employee at a smoke shop in DeKalb County Thursday.

According to a spokesperson with DeKalb County, two men tried to rob a check cashing store before eventually attempting a robbery at the Paradise Island Smoke Shop in Lithonia around 1 p.m.

“Why rob? If you got a pair of pliers, a tool, lawnmower and a gas can you got a job,” said Michael Graham.

He frequents the smoke shop twice a week.

"Nicest people in the world. Never had any problems with the man. He emails me about special cigars,” Graham told CBS46's Dontaye Carter.

One of the robbers put a shotgun to the back of the employee's head, according to police.

The employee turned around, grabbed the shotgun, pulled out his own gun and fired several shots the robber, killing him, according to police.

CBS46 has learned there is surveillance video that detectives want to check out to see what happened.

"It's hard for you to make judgement on how someone reacts, you feel your life's in jeopardy, it's hard for us to pass judgement,” said Captain Steven Fore.

Another suspect was able to escape in a white SUV, but is now in custody.

Detectives believe the two gunmen also may have attempted to rob a check cashing store about two miles away on Panola Road.

Police are not releasing the names of the suspects at this time because they plan on putting the surviving suspect in a photo lineup to try and link him to an earlier robbery.
