Need a furry friend? Several cats up for adoption after animal hoarding investigation

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Thirty-two animals were removed from a Savannah home Wednesday afternoon after authorities found them living in unhealthy conditions and in need of medical attention.

SCMPD Animal Control officers responded to reports of animal hoarding at a house off Ben Butler Road and encountered four cats in need of immediate medical attention.

Officers had to secure a warrant in order to enter the home where they discovered 28 other animals.

All 23 of the cats will be available for adoption soon at Animal Control's Shelter, and they will give you half off the fees in an effort to make more space.

The owners did surrender all of the cats to Animal Control which will help speed up the adoption process after the five day holding period for observation and care.

Animal Control also took custody of a tortoise, a squirrel and seven chihuahuas.

The owners did not surrender the dogs or the tortoise, so it will be up to a judge to decide whether to give Animal Control custody and allow them to move forward with adoptions.

The squirrel will have to be placed in a specialty facility to be taught how to be a squirrel. It will not be available for adoption.

Animal Control said there was a strong smell of ammonia in the home from a build up of urine. There were also bugs in the house.

The owners could be facing several animal cruelty related charges including animal neglect. The case will be brought to the Chatham County District Attorneys office.

The investigation is still on going.
