Truck driver in fatal I-16 wreck involving GSU students has history of falling asleep behind the wheel

BRYAN CO., GA (WTOC) - WTOC has obtained the driving history of John Wayne Johnson.  He was driving for Total Transportation and named in the wrongful death lawsuit for the families of Caitlyn Baggett, Emily Clark and Abbie DeLoach.

The deadly I-16 crash killed five Georgia Southern nursing students in April.

In 2011, Johnson was fired from his then trucking employer for crashing his tractor trailer into a guardrail. Johnson said he fell asleep behind the wheel.

This is something the lawyer's family believes Total Transportation should not have overlooked.

"We absolutely believe, that retaining and keeping a man that had a history of crashing and totaling out tractor trailer trucks for falling asleep at the wheel, I decision made by upper level management is something that should not have been done and that type of conduct we think is negligent; we think is wrongful; and that's the type of question a jury needs to decide," Mark Tate, attorney for Tate Law Group said.

The Georgia State Patrol is not finished with their investigation and has not said whether Johnson fell asleep at the wheel on April 22.
