State soccer cup plays for first time in Statesboro

. -

In the midst of the all the FIFA scandal - some positive press for soccer happening right here in Southeast
Georgia.

The City of Statesboro wooed the State Cup Tournament to the city away from Columbus, Georgia that has hosted
it for the last 14 years. Anyone and everyone is encouraged to come and watch the bracket style elimination for boys and girls club teams across the state. Two local standouts will be playing this weekend: Alex Wagner from Southeast Bulloch Academy and Nick
Wells, a sophomore at Southern on the Eagle soccer team  It's really a feather in the city's cap, and some serious coin in their purse.

Sharron Safiert, GA State Cup Tournament Director
"The Georgia Southern fields are magnificent and the playing surfaces are most important to the players and the coaches so that was the number one and everything else just added to the excitement and it's just
been terrific."

Darin Van Tassell, President Statesboro Convention and Vistiors Bureau
"It's a sports town; it's a sports destination whether it's big time college football or the impact from an economical standpoint."

And that impact - preliminary numbers show a little more than $1,00,000 in venue for the city in hotels, food, and merchandise.
