HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -
The American Junior Golf Association tour makes a stop in our area this week for the IJGA Junior Open. After the first round of play, Michael Mattice leads on the boys side while Ana Paula Rimerez leads on the girls side.
The tournament is at the Bear Creek Golf Club, and it is comprised of some of the best junior players in the country, with a few of them poised to make it in college golf and beyond. With the tournament on Hilton Head, it's convenient for those players that have called our area home for a few years while attending the IJGA School in Bluffton.
Nick Russell-"I'm used to this course, I've played it more than anyone that's playing in the tournament so that's an advantage, and another thing is, most of the kids are traveling so they can't sleep in their own bed, I get to sleep in my own bed. That's always good."
Clementina Rodriguez-"This is a great tournament because obviously it's sponsored by the academy that I've gone to for five years, and I've also played tournaments around these courses so I feel pretty confident playing this tournament again."
The tournament is a three day event with final round play on Thursday.
