New traffic lights coming to Augusta

Richmond and Columbia counties are putting new traffic signals in place that will feature a flashing yellow arrow, said Ron Lampkin, the Augusta-Richmond County traffic management specialist.

The first one will be running at intersection of Walton Way and D’Antignac Street downtown next week. This is the first of many that are going into place around Augusta.

The Federal Highway Administration said that the flashing yellow arrows make drivers more aware and cautious when going through an intersection. The lights have been proven to reduce left-turn crashes by 35 percent and to ease traffic congestion.

Lampkin said they have high hopes for the new lights.

"We’re hoping that the end result, it cuts down on angle collision. It makes the intersection a little more safer. More driver awareness to what’s coming direction, kinda slow things down a little bit," Lampkin said.

Lampkin said the new traffic signals are GDOT’s new standard lights.

They are being funded through the Transportation Investment Act and the Special Purpose Local Option sales tax.
