Man convicted in death of police officer in Athens

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - A man has been found guilty in the shooting death of a police officer in Athens.

A jury on Monday found Jamie Hood guilty of murder and numerous other charges in the March 2011 shooting death of Officer Elmer "Buddy" Christian III. A second officer was also wounded. Hood was tried on 70 charges.

Authorities have said Hood fled after the shooting and agreed to surrender if local news outlets covered his arrest live. Hood's former attorneys said that he was paranoid and delusional, but the man was found competent to stand trial.

Hood fired his court-appointed lawyers and chose to represent himself during the trial. Hood could face the death penalty.
