HEROES Bill Would Help Guard, Reserve Personnel

Help may be on the way for active-duty National Guard and Reserve personnel. It's been dubbed the HEROES Bill, for Historic Economic Relief for Our Exceptional Soldiers.

It's actually a package of four bills that would make Guard and Reserve personnel eligible for something like the GI Bill and tax deductions for Georgia residents with family members on active duty, and it would make any other income a soldier earns while on active duty tax free.

Another part of the bill deals with life insurance. "The insurance policies their employers might be providing them specifically says, if you die in a war zone then your insurance policy will not apply, so that $12,000 burial policy is all they have," said Lt. Governor Mark Taylor.

If passed, it would go into effect on July 1.
