SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The "Little Miss Happy Headed Pageant" was held Wednesday evening on Tennessee Ave.

The event is a scholarship pageant to raise money for "Blessings in a Bookbag". A charity that provides food to low-income families during the school year.

The pageant is designed for young, black girls with natural hair to give them pride in their appearance. It's also an opportunity to get dressed up and get their hair done the day before school starts.

"I thought this was a great idea because it allows black girls to be comfortable with their natural hair even if it’s wavy, kinky or really curly, it makes them comfortable with it,” said Tottianna Dryer.

Dryer is the mom of this year's winner, Alliyah. Congratulations to her and all of the contestants.

This was the second year the pageant was held.

WTOC’s Whitney Harris was a co-host.
