Family Finance: How to save on dorm room expenses

CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Summer is just about over for students across the country, and if your son or daughter is heading off to college, you're probably pulling your hair out getting everything ready for the big move.

According to a National Retail Federation survey, the average college student will spend nearly $900 on back to school spending this year.

If your child is heading to college for their freshman or even their senior year, make sure you stock up on the essentials without breaking the bank.

U.S. News and World Report has an excellent list of tips:

First, and this is extremely important, make a list. Don't let the stores determine what you need to buy. Try to put an estimated cost next to each item so you can have an idea of a budget.

Second, spend a little to invest. For example, investment pieces such as coffee tables and bookshelves can be used for storage AND as furniture. Good, quality electronic pieces can also last years beyond graduation.

Third, think outside of the big box! Go to resale stores and thrift shops. These stores are full of budget friendly items for a college student looking to save.

Last, but not least, don't be afraid of DIY. Get crafty! Put together decorations inspired by Pinterest or other blogs that can truly showcase individual style.
