SCMPD earns prestigious accreditation

CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

The Savannah Chatham Metro Police Department received the stamp of approval from the Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies at Thursday’s city council meeting.

There are about 18,000 law enforcement agencies across the country, and less than 800 are accredited by this organization.

The goal is to improve law enforcement service by creating a national body of standards.

"It says that we have a good police department structurally. That we have good people in this department and that we have had some turmoil. However, we are continuing to provide the services for this community and we are going to get those deficiencies perfect,” Metro Police Chief Jack Lumpkin said.

The accreditation lasts three years.
